Is Velvet Leaf Anthurium toxic to pets?
Anthurium clarinervium contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which are severely toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Chewing or biting into any part of the plant releases these needle-like crystals, causing immediate irritation and a burning sensation in the mouth, tongue, and lips. Additional symptoms can include excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, vomiting, and extreme difficulty in swallowing. In severe cases, swelling of the upper airway may occur, requiring immediate veterinary attention and supportive care.
