Is Cardboard Palm toxic to pets?
The Cardboard Palm is extremely toxic to household pets, including dogs, cats, and horses. The plant contains a potent neurotoxin called cycasin, which is concentrated in the seeds, leaves, and roots. Ingestion of any part of this plant can lead to severe poisoning, characterized by clinical symptoms such as vomiting, bloody diarrhea, excessive drooling, lethargy, increased thirst, bruising, liver failure, and in severe cases, death. Immediate veterinary intervention is critical if pet ingestion is suspected.
