Is Blue Agave toxic to pets?
Blue agave contains calcium oxalate crystals and saponins, which are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. When ingested, these compounds cause severe irritation to the mouth, tongue, and lips, leading to excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Direct contact with the sap can also cause severe skin irritation, dermatitis, and painful blistering in pets. It is vital to keep this plant completely out of reach of curious animals to prevent any accidental poisoning or physical injury from its sharp leaf spines.
