Is Avocado toxic to pets?
Avocados contain a fungicidal toxin called persin, which is present in the fruit, pit, leaves, and bark of the tree. While it is generally safe for humans, persin is highly toxic to many domestic animals, including cats, dogs, horses, cattle, goats, rabbits, and birds. Ingestion can lead to severe complications such as vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart, and even death. Pet owners should exercise extreme caution to keep pets away from fallen fruit, pits, and foliage.
