Is European Almond toxic to pets?
European almond trees, particularly wild varieties, can be toxic to pets such as dogs, cats, and horses. The danger primarily stems from cyanogenic glycosides found in bitter almonds and parts of the plant, which can release cyanide when ingested. While domesticated sweet almonds may cause mild gastrointestinal upset or present a severe choking and intestinal blockage hazard due to their hard shells, wild bitter almonds pose a severe systemic poisoning risk requiring immediate veterinary attention if consumed.
