Is Delphinium toxic to pets?
Delphiniums are extremely toxic to pets, including dogs, cats, and horses. The plant contains high concentrations of dangerous diterpenoid alkaloids, such as delphinine, which primarily affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Ingestion of any plant part, especially the young leaves and seeds, can cause severe clinical symptoms including excessive drooling, intense vomiting, colic, muscular tremors, paralysis, cardiac irregularities, and potentially fatal respiratory failure. Immediate veterinary intervention is critical if pet ingestion is suspected.
