Is Dieffenbachia toxic to pets?
Dieffenbachia is extremely toxic to pets, including cats and dogs. The plant contains needle-like calcium oxalate crystals called raphides. When a pet chews or bites into any part of the plant, these crystals are released, causing immediate and severe burning, irritation, and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips. Ingestion can lead to excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and in severe cases, airway obstruction. Immediate veterinary attention is strongly recommended if ingestion is suspected.
