Is Pencil Cactus toxic to pets?
The pencil cactus is highly toxic to pets including cats and dogs. The plant contains a milky white latex sap that is released whenever the stems are broken or cut. If a pet comes into contact with this sap, it can cause severe skin irritation, redness, blistering, and intense discomfort. Ingestion of the sap leads to severe irritation of the mouth, tongue, and stomach, resulting in excessive drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the sap gets into the eyes, it can cause extreme pain and temporary or even permanent damage to the cornea. Immediate veterinary attention is strongly recommended if exposure occurs.
