Is Crabapple toxic to pets?
While the flesh of the crabapple fruit is generally considered safe, the seeds, stems, and leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides (specifically amygdalin). When ingested, chewed, and digested by household pets such as dogs and cats, these compounds can release toxic cyanide. Consumption of large quantities of seeds or plant parts can lead to serious poisoning symptoms, including difficulty breathing, hyperventilation, dilated pupils, vomiting, and potential shock. Pet owners should ensure fallen fruit is regularly cleared away to prevent accidental ingestion by curious animals.
