Is Stone Fruit Trees toxic to pets?
Many species within the Prunus genus, including cherries, peaches, plums, and apricots, contain cyanogenic glycosides in their leaves, stems, bark, and seed pits (stones). When chewed or ingested by pets such as dogs and cats, these plant parts release toxic hydrogen cyanide. Symptoms of cyanide poisoning in pets include difficulty breathing, bright red gums, dilated pupils, shock, and potentially fatal outcomes if immediate veterinary intervention is not sought.
