Is Cedar Tree toxic to pets?
Cedar trees, particularly their wood and essential oils, contain aromatic compounds such as thujone and various phenols that can be toxic to pets if ingested in large quantities or if concentrated oils are applied. Ingestion of cedar needles, bark, or wood shavings by dogs, cats, or horses can cause gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, and central nervous system depression. Additionally, prolonged exposure to cedar wood shavings used as pet bedding can lead to respiratory irritation and potential liver damage over time due to the continuous inhalation of aromatic hydrocarbons.
