Is Winter Aconite toxic to pets?
Winter aconite contains highly toxic cardiac glycosides, specifically compounds like ranunculin which break down into protoanemonin, alongside other alkaloids that are extremely dangerous to dogs, cats, and horses. Ingestion of any part of the plant—especially the tubers—can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, intense abdominal pain, irregular heart rhythms, and in severe cases, systemic collapse. Immediate veterinary intervention is critical if an animal is suspected of consuming this toxic plant.
