Is Sweet Cherry toxic to pets?
Sweet cherry trees contain cyanogenic glycosides in their leaves, stems, bark, and the seeds (pits) of the fruit. When chewed or ingested by pets such as dogs, cats, and horses, these compounds release hydrogen cyanide, which inhibits cellular respiration. Clinical signs of cyanide poisoning in animals include difficulty breathing, bright red gums, dilated pupils, shock, and potentially fatal outcomes. It is critical to keep pets away from fallen leaves, twigs, and discarded fruit pits to prevent accidental toxicity.
