Is Calla Lily toxic to pets?
Calla lilies are toxic to cats, dogs, and other domestic pets due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. When any part of the plant is chewed or ingested, these microscopic needle-like crystals are released, causing intense irritation, burning, and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips. Affected pets may drool excessively, vomit, and experience severe difficulty swallowing or refusal to eat. In rare cases, severe swelling can obstruct airways, requiring immediate veterinary attention and supportive care to manage symptoms and prevent dehydration.
