Is Peppermint toxic to pets?
Peppermint plants and their essential oils are toxic to household pets such as cats and dogs. Ingestion of the leaves or exposure to concentrated peppermint oil can cause significant gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea in pets. The menthol present in the plant can be particularly irritating to their digestive tracts and mucous membranes. Furthermore, cats are exceptionally sensitive to essential oils, and concentrated forms can lead to central nervous system depression or liver damage. It is strongly recommended to keep peppermint plants well out of reach of curious pets and avoid using peppermint essential oil in areas where pets roam freely.
