Is Castor Bean Plant toxic to pets?
The castor bean plant is extremely toxic to pets including cats, dogs, and horses. The seeds contain ricin, a potent water-soluble toxin, as well as ricinine, an alkaloid. Ingestion of even a single masticated seed can cause severe poisoning, gastroenteritis, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, dehydration, and potentially death. Immediate veterinary intervention is critical if exposure is suspected, as there is no known antidote once severe systemic poisoning occurs, and supportive care is the primary method of treatment for affected animals.
