Is Pokeweed toxic to pets?
Pokeweed is extremely toxic to dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. Ingestion of any part of the plant—especially the large taproot, mature leaves, and dark purple berries—can lead to severe poisoning. Symptoms in pets include intense vomiting, bloody diarrhea, excessive salivation, abdominal pain, weakness, tremors, and in severe cases, respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. Due to the high concentration of phytolaccotoxin and phytolaccagenin, immediate veterinary intervention is required if an animal is suspected of consuming any portion of this wild perennial plant.
