Is Water hemlocks toxic to pets?
Water hemlocks are lethally toxic to dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and all other domestic animals. Every part of the plant, especially the tuberous roots, contains the powerful neurotoxin cicutoxin. Ingestion of even a minuscule amount can rapidly lead to severe clinical signs, including excessive salivation, intense neurological tremors, violent and painful epileptic-like seizures, loss of coordination, respiratory paralysis, and ultimately death within a matter of hours. Due to the rapid and aggressive onset of symptoms, veterinary intervention is rarely successful once ingestion has occurred, making immediate prevention and removal of the plant essential.
