Is Manchineel toxic to pets?
The manchineel tree is extraordinarily toxic to all domestic pets and animals. Ingestion of any part of the plant, especially the leaves or the small green apple-like fruits, can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, intense internal burning, profuse salivation, vomiting, and potentially fatal systemic shock. Merely brushing against the foliage or getting the caustic sap on an animal's fur and skin can cause severe dermatitis, painful blisters, and intense irritation. Pet owners must ensure their animals are kept far away from these trees, particularly in coastal areas where the tree naturally grows.
