Wayfaring Tree
The Wayfaring Tree is a large, deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe, western Asia, and northwest Africa. It is widely recognized for its attractive, wrinkled, dark green leaves that feature densely hairy, grayish-white undersides. In spring, it produces flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers that attract numerous pollinating insects. These flowers are followed by clusters of berries that transition in color from green to red, and eventually turn a glossy black when fully ripe. Highly adaptable and robust, the Wayfaring Tree is frequently planted in woodland edges, hedgerows, and ornamental gardens for its ornamental appeal, wildlife value, and ability to thrive in challenging soil conditions including chalky substrates.
