Bitter Orange

Bitter Orange

The bitter orange, known scientifically as Citrus aurantium, is an aromatic and evergreen tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. Native to tropical Asia, it has been widely cultivated across the Mediterranean and other subtropical regions for centuries. The plant features glossy green leaves, fragrant white blossoms, and distinctive pebbled fruits that yield a sour and bitter pulp. Although generally unpalatable for raw consumption, bitter oranges are exceptionally prized in the culinary world for making traditional marmalades, liqueurs like Cointreau and Grand Marnier, and various flavorings. Furthermore, extracts derived from its peel and flowers contain active compounds such as synephrine, which are frequently utilized in traditional herbal medicine, dietary supplements, and high-end cosmetic formulations.
