Taro
Taro is a tropical perennial plant primarily grown as a root vegetable for its edible corms, and as a leaf vegetable. It features large, heart-shaped leaves that can reach impressive sizes, earning it the common moniker of elephant ear. Native to tropical Asia and the Pacific regions, taro requires warm climates, abundant moisture, and rich, organic soils to thrive. Both the corms and leaves are staples in various global cuisines, though they must be thoroughly cooked before consumption due to high levels of calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause severe irritation if eaten raw.
