European Mistletoe
Mistletoe is a fascinating hemiparasitic plant species that attaches to and draws water and nutrients from host trees while still producing some of its own energy through photosynthesis. Famous for its evergreen leaves and sticky white berries, it holds a prominent place in European folklore, winter celebrations, and holiday traditions. Ecologically, it serves as a critical keystone species, providing food, shelter, and nesting sites for a wide array of specialized birds and insects. However, because it relies heavily on a host tree, heavy infestations can occasionally weaken or stress the host plant, though it rarely kills a healthy mature tree outright.
