Lentil
The lentil is an edible legume known for its lens-shaped seeds. It is an annual plant that grows as a small, bushy herb, originating from the Near East and Central Asia. Widely cultivated for its culinary value, lentils are a remarkable source of plant-based protein, dietary fiber, iron, and essential minerals. They thrive in temperate and subtropical climates with well-draining soils and are extremely drought tolerant compared to other legumes. The plant produces small, self-pollinating flowers that develop into short pods containing typically one or two seeds each.
