Sea Grape
The sea grape is a remarkable, sturdy coastal plant native to tropical coastal regions of the Americas and the Caribbean. Scientifically known as Coccoloba uvifera, this woody evergreen shrub or small tree belongs to the buckwheat family, Polygonaceae. It is widely recognized for its large, leathery, rounded leaves that feature prominent red veins, and its grape-like clusters of edible fruits that turn from green to purple as they ripen. Highly tolerant of salt spray and sandy soils, the sea grape plays a vital ecological role in stabilizing coastal dunes, preventing beach erosion, and providing essential habitat for various coastal wildlife species. Additionally, it is frequently cultivated as an ornamental landscape plant in coastal gardens and urban environments due to its unique tropical appearance, architectural branching, and resilience against harsh coastal winds and salty air.
