Jabuticaba

Jabuticaba

The Jabuticaba, scientifically known as Plinia cauliflora, is a remarkable fruit-bearing tree native to the rainforests of southeastern Brazil. It is most famous for its unique habit of cauliflory, where its thick, edible purple-black fruits grow directly on the trunk and main branches rather than on terminal twigs or stems. This gives the tree the striking appearance of being covered in dark, glossy grapes. The fruit possesses a thick, astringent skin and a translucent, sweet, gelatinous pulp that encloses one to four seeds. Jabuticaba trees are slow-growing, evergreen specimens with attractive peeling bark and glossy green foliage, making them popular both as exotic backyard orchard trees and as exceptional specimens for bonsai cultivation.
