Spindle Palm
The Spindle Palm, scientifically known as Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, is a striking and highly ornamental palm species native to Rodrigues Island, Mauritius. It is widely recognized for its distinctively swollen, spindle-shaped trunk that tapers toward both the top and the base, giving it a very unique architectural appearance. Typically growing to moderate heights of around 3 to 6 meters, this slow-growing palm features graceful, arching pinnate fronds with characteristic yellowish or orange leaf shafts. It is a popular choice for tropical and subtropical landscape designs, thriving brilliantly in coastal areas due to its good salt tolerance. While sensitive to severe frost, it makes an exceptional specimen plant in gardens or can be successfully container-grown for patios and bright indoor spaces when proper environmental conditions are meticulously maintained.
