Golden Barrel Cactus

The Golden Barrel Cactus, scientifically known as Echinocactus grusonii, is one of the most recognizable and popular cacti in cultivation. Native to the dry, rocky slopes of central Mexico, this striking succulent features a perfectly spherical, ribbed green body densely covered with rigid, contrasting golden-yellow spines. As it matures over many decades, it can grow into a large specimen, occasionally taking on a slightly cylindrical shape. It is highly valued for its architectural form and striking coloration, making it a standout feature in desert gardens, rockeries, and arid landscape designs worldwide. While endangered in its native natural habitat due to dam construction, it thrives reliably in cultivation when provided with proper environmental conditions, adequate bright sunlight, and well-draining soil.
