Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss is a fascinating and iconic epiphyte native to the southern United States and parts of Central and South America. Despite its common name, it is neither Spanish nor a true moss; rather, it is a flowering bromeliad belonging to the pineapple family. It hangs gracefully from the branches of large trees, such as live oaks and bald cypresses, absorbing moisture and nutrients directly from the air and precipitation through specialized scale-like structures called trichomes. Because it does not root in the soil or parasitize its host tree, it is completely harmless to the trees it inhabits, serving instead as a unique component of southeastern woodland ecosystems where it provides shelter for numerous wildlife species.
