Living Stones

Living Stones, scientifically known as Lithops, are fascinating succulent plants native to southern Africa, renowned for their remarkable mimicry of stones and pebbles. This adaptation helps them blend into their rocky natural environment to avoid being eaten by thirsty animals. Each plant typically consists of just two thick, succulent leaves joined at the base and almost completely buried in the soil, with a fissure across the top from which golden yellow or white daisy-like flowers emerge. They have an extremely unique growth cycle, where new leaves grow from the inside, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the older outer leaves until they wither away completely. Caring for them requires extreme caution regarding watering, as they are exceptionally prone to rotting if they receive too much moisture during their dormant periods. They thrive in bright, direct sunlight and require very gritty, fast-draining soil to replicate their native arid habitat conditions.
