Silk Floss Tree
The Silk Floss Tree, scientifically known as Ceiba speciosa, is a magnificent and visually striking deciduous tree native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South America. Famous for its thick, bottle-shaped green trunk studded with sharp conical prickles, it serves as a water-storage mechanism during dry periods. During autumn, the tree bursts into a breathtaking display of large, pinkish-purple, orchid-like flowers that attract numerous pollinators. Following the blooms, woody pods develop, bursting open to release masses of silky, cotton-like fluff attached to seeds. This fascinating adaptation aids in wind dispersal. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental landscape specimen in warm climates around the world.
