Sugarcane

Sugarcane is a tall, perennial grass belonging to the Poaceae family, widely cultivated for its sweet sap used primarily in the production of table sugar, molasses, and ethanol. Originating in Southeast Asia and New Guinea, it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates with high humidity and abundant rainfall. The plant features thick, jointed, fibrous stalks that accumulate sucrose in the internodes. With a rapid growth rate, sugarcane requires extensive sunlight, rich well-draining soil, and consistent moisture to reach heights of up to four meters. Beyond sugar production, its byproducts are utilized in rum manufacturing, electricity generation through bagasse burning, and various bio-based products, making it a critical agricultural commodity worldwide.
