Ackee
The ackee, scientifically known as Blighia sapida, is an evergreen tree native to tropical West Africa, particularly recognized as the national fruit of Jamaica. It belongs to the Sapindaceae soapberry family and produces a distinctive pear-shaped fruit that turns from green to bright red and yellow when ripe. Inside the fruit are large black seeds attached to fleshy, creamy-yellow arils, which are the only edible part of the plant. When fully mature and naturally opened on the tree, the arils can be harvested and cooked to create beloved traditional dishes like ackee and saltfish. However, the unripe or improperly prepared fruit contains dangerous toxins called hypoglycin A and B, which can cause severe illness or death if ingested. Therefore, understanding the correct harvesting and cooking methods is essential for safe consumption of this unique tropical fruit.
