Bunya Pine
The Bunya Pine, scientifically known as Araucaria bidwillii, is a large evergreen coniferous tree native to subtropical rainforests in eastern Australia. Renowned for its distinctive, symmetrical dome-shaped crown and thick, dark brown bark, this ancient tree can reach impressive heights of up to 50 meters in its native habitat. It produces massive, heavy cones weighing up to 10 kilograms, which contain large, edible kernels historically valued by Indigenous Australian communities as a significant seasonal food source. The Bunya Pine is not a true pine, but rather a member of the Araucariaceae family, linking it to prehistoric flora dating back to the Mesozoic era. Cultivated globally as an ornamental specimen in large parks and botanical gardens, it requires ample space, deep well-draining soil, and a subtropical to temperate climate to truly thrive.
