California Poppy
The California Poppy is the state flower of California, renowned for its brilliant golden-orange cup-shaped blossoms and finely divided, feathery, blue-green foliage. It is a hardy annual or short-lived perennial plant native to the western United States and Mexico. The plant typically thrives in poor, well-draining soils and full sun exposure, making it extremely drought-tolerant once established. During its early growth stages, it forms a dense, low-growing rosette of deeply lobed leaves before sending up flowering stems that burst into vibrant displays in the springtime. It reseeds itself readily every year, returning reliably in gardens where conditions mimic its native Mediterranean-type climate.
