Tamarillo

Tamarillo

The tamarillo, scientifically known as Solanum betaceum, is a small, fast-growing, evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub or small tree native to the Andean regions of South America. It is widely cultivated for its egg-shaped, edible fruits that feature a rich, tangy, and slightly sweet flavor profile. The plant typically reaches heights of two to five meters, bearing large, soft, heart-shaped leaves and fragrant pinkish-white flowers that eventually develop into glossy red, orange, or yellow fruits. Tamarillos are highly valued in culinary traditions for making jams, chutneys, and refreshing beverages. They thrive in subtropical climates with moderate rainfall, rich well-drained soils, and protection from harsh frost and strong winds.
