Banksia

Banksia

Banksia is a prominent genus of around 170 species of native Australian wildflowers and plants in the family Proteaceae. Recognised for their characteristic decorative flower spikes and fruiting cones, as well as woody 'cones' and gnarled leaves, they are a staple of the Australian flora. These plants range from woody shrubs to large trees, predominantly found in native Australian bushland. Banksias play a vital ecological role by providing nectar for a wide array of native fauna, including birds, possums, and insects, especially during the colder months when other food sources are scarce.
