American Sycamore
The American Sycamore is a massive and easily recognizable deciduous tree native to the eastern and central United States. Renowned for its distinctive mottled bark that peels off in large camouflage-like plates, it reveals shades of white, green, and brown underneath. It typically grows near streams and rivers, developing an expansive, spreading crown and a massive trunk. As one of the largest hardwoods in North America, it is widely planted as a shade tree in large parks and along broad avenues. The tree produces unique spherical fruit balls called buttonballs that persist through the winter months, adding year-round visual interest to natural and urban landscapes alike.
