Moss Rose
Portulaca grandiflora, commonly known as moss rose or sun plant, is a succulent flowering plant belonging to the family Portulacaceae. Native to southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, it is widely cultivated in temperate and tropical regions as an ornamental garden plant. This low-growing, spreading annual or short-lived perennial typically reaches heights between 10 to 20 cm and features cylindrical, fleshy succulent leaves and vibrant, cup-shaped flowers that open in bright sunlight. The flowers display a dazzling array of colors including red, orange, pink, white, and yellow. Portulacas are exceptionally drought-tolerant, thriving in poor, sandy soils and baking summer heat, making them a popular choice for rock gardens, borders, and hanging baskets.
