European Spindle

European Spindle

The European Spindle, scientifically known as Euonymus europaeus, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to a wide swath of Europe and western Asia. Renowned for its brilliant autumn foliage and striking, colorful fruits that split open to reveal bright orange seeds, it has long been a popular choice for ornamental landscaping. Historically, the dense, hard wood of this plant was famously utilized for crafting spindles used in wool spinning, which gives the plant its common name. While it offers high ecological value for pollinators and birds, every part of the plant is toxic to humans and pets if ingested, containing compounds that cause severe gastrointestinal distress and other systemic symptoms.
