Cornelian Cherry

Cornelian Cherry

The Cornelian Cherry, scientifically known as Cornus mas, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to Southern Europe and Southwestern Asia. It is widely appreciated for its bright yellow flowers that bloom very early in the spring before the leaves emerge, providing a much-needed splash of color after winter. Later in the summer, it produces glossy, bright red, edible oblong fruits known as cornelian cherries. These fruits have a tart, tangy flavor and are commonly used to make jams, syrups, and traditional liqueurs. The plant is exceptionally hardy, adaptable to various soil types, and serves as an excellent ornamental specimen for gardens and landscapes, offering year-round interest with its attractive foliage, peeling bark, and abundant seasonal blooms.
