Caper Bush
The caper bush, scientifically known as Capparis spinosa, is a perennial winter-deciduous plant notable for its succulent leaves and striking white-to-pinkish flowers featuring prominent long purple stamens. Native to the Mediterranean basin and arid regions across Africa and Asia, this resilient shrub thrives in harsh, rocky environments with minimal water availability. The plant is globally celebrated for its edible flower buds, known simply as capers, which are typically harvested before they open and subsequently pickled or salted for culinary use. Furthermore, the larger mature fruit, known as caper berries, are also consumed as a delicacy. The caper bush possesses an exceptionally deep root system allowing it to endure prolonged droughts, and it often naturalizes effortlessly in dry stone walls, arid cliffs, and poor soils where other crops fail to survive, making it an ecologically valuable species for preventing soil erosion in fragile Mediterranean landscapes.
