Summer Savory
Summer savory is a popular annual herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Western Asia. Known scientifically as Satureja hortensis, it has been cultivated for centuries for its aromatic, slightly peppery flavor, reminiscent of a cross between marjoram and thyme. This delicate yet flavorful herb is widely used in culinary applications, especially in traditional European bean dishes, stews, and meat seasonings. Beyond the kitchen, summer savory possesses mild medicinal properties, traditional uses include digestive aid and antiseptic applications. It thrives in sunny, warm environments with well-drained soils, making it an excellent addition to both herb gardens and container plantings. As an annual, it completes its life cycle in a single growing season, typically germinating in spring, flowering in mid-summer, and dying back with the first autumn frosts.
