Globe Artichoke
The globe artichoke is a perennial thistle variety cultivated globally as a vegetable. The edible portion of the plant consists of the flower buds before they open up into bloom. The large, thistle-like heads grow up to two metres in height and feature striking lobed, silvery-green leaves. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, globe artichokes are highly valued both for their unique culinary applications and their significant medicinal properties, particularly in supporting liver function and digestion. They thrive best in temperate climates with mild winters and sunny, warm summers, requiring well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter to reach their full potential as an ornamental and edible powerhouse in the garden.
