Purple Mangosteen

The purple mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia. Widely cultivated in warm tropical regions, it produces an exceptionally prized edible fruit known for its sweet, tangy, and juicy segmented white flesh encased within a deep reddish-purple, thick rind. The tree requires specific tropical conditions with high humidity, consistent warmth, and abundant rainfall to thrive. It is notoriously slow-growing and sensitive to extreme temperatures, making cultivation outside of its native tropical habitat quite challenging. Beyond its culinary appeal, various parts of the plant have been traditionally used in folk medicine across Southeast Asia for their potential therapeutic properties.
