Longan

The longan, known scientifically as Dimocarpus longan, is a tropical evergreen tree famous for producing edible fruit that closely relates to the lychee and rambutan. Native to South and Southeast Asia, the longan tree typically reaches a moderate height, featuring dense foliage with glossy, pinnate leaves and small yellowish-white flowers. Its fruit grows in pendant clusters, characterized by a thin, leathery, brownish rind that encases a translucent, sweet, and juicy white flesh surrounding a single dark seed, giving it the appearance of a magical eye when peeled. Beyond its culinary appeal, longan wood is durable and valued in timber applications, while various parts of the plant are utilized in traditional Asian herbal medicine systems for their purported health and wellness properties.
