Common Medlar

The common medlar is a large shrub or small deciduous tree known for its unique, edible pome fruit and attractive, twisted growth habit. Native to southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe, it has a long history of cultivation dating back to Roman and medieval times. The tree features large, dark green leaves that turn vibrant yellow and brown in autumn, accompanied by large, solitary white or pale pink flowers in late spring. Its fruits, famously harvested after the first autumn frosts, undergo a softening process called bletting before they are consumed, developing a rich, custard-like texture and a unique flavor reminiscent of apple butter and spices.
