English Walnut

The English walnut, scientifically known as Juglans regia, is a large deciduous tree prized globally for its highly nutritious and flavorful edible nuts, as well as its valuable hardwood timber. Native to a region stretching from the Balkans through Central Asia to the Himalayas, this majestic tree features a broad, rounded canopy, smooth grey bark that develops deep furrows with age, and distinctive compound leaves composed of several leaflets. It thrives in temperate climates with deep, well-draining, fertile soils and full sun exposure. Beyond agricultural production, the English walnut is frequently planted as a magnificent shade tree in large landscapes, parks, and orchards. Its roots and fallen leaves produce juglone, a natural chemical compound that inhibits the growth of certain neighboring plants, a characteristic known as allelopathy. The harvest consists of hard-shelled nuts enveloped in a green, fleshy husk that splits open upon maturity in the autumn months.
