White Mulberry
The White Mulberry is a fast-growing, small to medium-sized tree native to northern China, which is widely cultivated across the globe primarily to feed the silkworms used in silk production. The plant is characterized by its alternate, deciduous leaves which frequently exhibit variable shapes, ranging from simple unlobed ovals to deeply lobed structures on the same branch. White Mulberry trees produce sweet, edible aggregate fruits that transition from white to pink and ultimately dark purple or black when fully ripe. Beyond its agricultural and culinary significance, this hardy tree adapts well to various urban environments, often serving as a shade tree or windbreak. However, its high pollen production can be a trigger for seasonal allergies, and its prolific fruit can create messes on sidewalks and driveways when dropped.
