Ponytail Palm

The Ponytail Palm, scientifically known as Beaucarnea recurvata, is actually not a true palm at all, but rather a member of the asparagus family, closely related to agaves and yuccas. Native to the semi-desert regions of eastern Mexico, it is renowned for its distinctive bulbous trunk at the base, which is used to store water during periods of drought, earning it the common nickname 'Elephant's Foot'. Sprouting from the top of this swollen trunk are long, slender, ribbon-like leaves that cascade downward in a graceful, ponytail-like fashion.
